SIXTH DAY | Shakespeare's Globe

The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, and was destroyed by the fire in 1613. A second Globe Theatre was rebuilt on the same site in 1614 but closed in 1642.

A modern reconstruction of it, the "Shakespeare's Globe" opened in 1997.

The Globe Theatre is built like the Elizabethan theatre that it was before. It is a round construction in wood and the sitting places are protected by a roof, whereas in front of the scene it's open-air.

Everyone could access to it, but places were different according to the social category of the spectator : the richest had sitting places, with a doog view of the scene and protected by the roof. The poorer were standing in front the scene and had to deal with the bad wether. The Lords had their own places next to the musicians. They saw the back of the actors but everyone could see them..

When we visited it there were some works and some actors repeated a play.

This visit was interesting and I would have loved to see one play at the time of Shakespeare, in his real theatre.

We finished the visit in the Globe's museum and of course in its shop.

But then, it was Mac Donald's time!
